"Hot air" (in the sense of "spare" emissions units) is likely to be a key aspect of the negotiations at some point, but how much of what we are exposed to at the Bella Center is "hot air"? Rumours of newly-adopted positions and texts are rife. Every word is closely scrutinised and generates speculation.

So monday was the day we have all been waiting for. Copenhagen opened, almost literally, with great fanfare. The "yes we can" phraseology of Obama was seized upon by Connie Hedegaard (the EU's new Climate Change Commissioner and Chair of COP15) as she delivered a rousing speech at the opening of the COP15.

The Association of Small Islands States caused some surprise right from the start by calling for a global agreement to limit temperature increase to no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius, instead of the previous limit of 2 degrees.

We believe an internationally legally binding agreement is essential. We pledge our continued support to the leaders-driven process guided by the Danish Prime Minister and his efforts to deliver a comprehensive, substantial and operationally binding agreement in Copenhagen leading towards a full legally binding outcome no later than 2010.
